After a great start we hope to build on our incredible first year, History in Action is back — bigger, bolder and ready to bring the past to life once again.

Journey through thousands of years of human history, from Roman legionaries and medieval knights to Tudor craftspeople and wartime civilians. Explore living history encampments, watch thrilling demonstrations, discover traditional skills and hear fascinating stories from across the centuries.

With historical groups and reenactors from across Britain and Europe, there’s plenty to see and get involved in — from spectacular displays and hands-on activities to talks and a vibrant heritage market packed with period goods, books, collectables and curiosities.

Military Odyssey

Europe’s largest and most diverse multi-period living history events, bringing thousands of visitors together over the August Bank Holiday weekend for an unforgettable journey through more than 2,000 years of military history and heritage.

From the power and discipline of the Roman legions and the pageantry of medieval knights to the courage of those who served in the World Wars and the professionalism of modern military forces, Military Odyssey brings history vividly to life. Across the showground, authentic battle reenactments, immersive displays and passionate living historians recreate the people, stories, equipment and experiences that have shaped generations.

At the heart of the event, spectacular battle reenactments transport audiences into the sights, sounds and drama of warfare through the ages. Visitors can witness historic tactics and formations brought to life, while living history encampments offer the chance to meet knowledgeable reenactors and discover what everyday life was really like for soldiers and civilians throughout history.

A major highlight of Military Odyssey is its impressive military vehicle display, showcasing an extensive collection of historic tanks, armoured vehicles, jeeps, motorcycles and other military machinery. Lovingly restored and displayed in their historical context, these remarkable vehicles provide a fascinating insight into the technology and engineering behind military history.

But Military Odyssey is about far more than the battlefield. There is entertainment and activity for the whole family, with a lively programme of interactive experiences, including jive dancing, children’s entertainment, demonstrations and evening performances that keep the showground buzzing long after the daytime events have finished.

History enthusiasts can also explore a fantastic selection of trade stalls, with militaria, uniforms, medals, memorabilia, books, collectibles and specialist items available from traders and exhibitors.

Eastbourne is proud to host Armed Forces Day at Five Acre Field, bringing together the local community to honour and celebrate the men and women who serve, and have served, in the Armed Forces. This special event recognises the dedication, professionalism, and sacrifice of our service personnel, veterans, reservists, cadets, and their families.

Set in the open surroundings of Five Acre Field, the day offers a programme of activities, displays, and entertainment for all ages, providing an opportunity to learn more about the Armed Forces while enjoying a memorable day out. Armed Forces Day in Eastbourne is a chance to show our support, reflect on the values of service and commitment, and say thank you to those who protect our freedoms.
